Postdoctoral Research Position in microbial biodiversity in saline ecosystems

Join the International Project SaltyBEATS@NCU -Toruń!

Join us in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation in salt-affected landscapes!

Location: Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland

Application Deadline: 27 February 2025 - 23:59 (Europe/Warsaw)
Start Date: 1 April 2025

We are seeking a highly motivated Assistant professor (Postdoctoral Researcher) to join our international research team as part of the SaltyBEATS project, funded by Biodiversa+ and the National Science Centre (NCN) under the BiodivNBS competition.

About the Project:

This EU-funded initiative SaltyBEATS (Salty symphonies: bringing back BiodivErsity in mArginal Saltlands) is an interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to enhance the resilience and biodiversity of saline ecosystems through ecological engineering, improved plant breeding, and the utilization of functional microbial diversity.

The successful candidate will contribute to developing and implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) that enhance crop resilience and restore biodiversity in saline environments. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the interface of plant ecology, soil microbiology, and sustainable agriculture, collaborating with leading international researchers and stakeholders. The project is a collaboration between eight partner institutions across six countries, integrating expertise in microbial diversity, plant physiology, ecology, biodiversity mapping, land use modeling, economics, and environmental research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Map and assess biodiversity in naturally saline habitats, including halophytic species and soil microbiota.
  • Research the taxonomic and functional biodiversity of microorganisms in saline environments.
  • Collaborate closely with international research teams to develop nature-based solutions for restoring saline ecosystems.
  • Apply advanced microbial and plant analysis techniques to assess biodiversity and ecosystem function.
  • Disseminate research findings through scientific publications, reports, and presentations to support policy development and societal impact.

What We Offer:

  • A full-time postdoctoral position with competitive salary.
  • A dynamic, and inclusive research environment.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and field research opportunities.
  • Collaboration with leading experts in biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable land management.
  • A unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research aligned with the EU’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy.
